‘Supermoon’ over Baldwin Beach

May 7, 2012
The Maui News
The “supermoon,” the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, rises Saturday night. Kula resident Fred Rawe photographed the phenomenon, which occurs when the moon’s elliptical orbit brings it closer to the Earth than usual, from Baldwin Beach at 7:30 p.m. Using a tripod and a lens at full zoom, Rawe didn’t let strong winds and a cloud bank obscuring the horizon keep him from getting his shot. “I find myself (especially) interested in moonlight/starlight because we live in Kula, where — at dark and unaffected by urban glare — the effects of such light are often brilliant,” said Rawe, who also photographed the moon from his home as it set Sunday.
