Firefighters battle flames along the shoulder of Mokulele Highway near the intersection with Piilani Highway in Kihei on Sunday afternoon. Maui fire Battalion Chief Allen Duarte said a BMW caught fire after the driver lost control and swerved off the road shortly before 5 p.m. The vehicle fire then sparked a brush fire that burned about a quarter of an acre, Duarte said. Kihei engine and Wailea tanker and ladder crews responded to the scene. Crews were dispatched at 4:49 p.m., arrived at 4:55 p.m. and had the fire under control by 5:10 p.m., Duarte said. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle was declared a total loss, he said.
