KAHULUI - A 40-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after the motorcyle he was driving collided with a van at the intersection of Dairy Road and Pakaula Street near the Maui Harley-Davidson store in Kahului, officials said.
Police identified the motorcyclist as Jerome Armstrong of Lahaina. Armstrong, who was wearing a helmet and protective eyewear, was found unresponsive with multiple traumatic injuries when medics and a fire rescue crew arrived at the scene at 2:28 p.m., according to Ryan Joslin, public information officer for the Maui County Paramedics Association. He said that the man was transported in critical and unstable condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of a 2007 Honda Odyessey, a 55-year-old Kahului resident, was making a left-hand turn off of Dairy Road onto Pakaula Street when the vehicle was hit by Armstrong's 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 600 motorcycle, which was headed in the direction of the airport on Dairy Road, according to police.
The van driver and a front-seat passenger, a 49-year-old female from Lanai, were not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.
Police closed Dairy Road between Puunene Avenue and Hukilike Street while traffic investigators worked at the scene.
The traffic death was the 13th this year on Maui County roads, compared with five at the same time last year. Five motorcyclists have died in traffic crashes on Maui this year.
