Four Seasons Resort Maui Regional Vice President and General Manager Thomas Steinhauer plants an iliahi, or sandalwood, at the resort April 24 as part of the resort’s Earth Week celebration. Parent company Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts launched an initiative to plant 10 million trees to kick off last year’s Earth Week. As part of the initiative, Four Seasons employees have planted more than 200 trees on the property’s grounds and more than 2,000 trees on Kahoolawe. This year, the resort planted an iliahi, which was once overharvested almost to its demise. The tree-planting ceremony was overseen by kumu Kealii Taua, who performed a Hawaiian blessing and protocol ceremony for the ahu (stone alter) and the iliahi.
