Having one party in charge hurts a state’s people

May 10, 2012
The Maui News

In response to a May 5 letter writer who gave an example of the trend of politics in Hawaii where one party in a state has total domination: Take for example the condition of similar states to Hawaii, like Illinois, California and Wisconsin, where a single party has had total control for decades and how their current financial conditions are in deep trouble.

In these states, the cost of just future retirement benefits alone have out grown any reasonable way for these states to return to solvency without huge tax increases to state residents who are already heavily overtaxed.

What comes next? People moving to other places with lower taxes leaving less with the ability to pay the taxes.
