WAIKAPU - The Maui freight operations of Dependable Hawaiian Express (DHX Maui) has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's Smart Way Transport Partnership, a collaboration between government and private industry to work toward a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly transport system.
In joining Smart Way, DHX Maui will be using the tools and methodology created and refined by the EPA to track and reduce emissions and fuel use for operations on Maui.
Some 3,000 companies in the U.S. currently are partners in this joint effort by government and private industry.
"The Transport Partnership already has saved 1.5 billion gallons of fuel, $3.6 billion in fuel costs, 17.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 215,000 tons of oxides of nitrogen, and 8,000 tons of particulate matter," said Wilfred "Junior" Robello, manager of DHX Maui's operations.
The DHX Maui warehouse, built 2 years ago, and its trucking operation are an important link in the forwarder facilities in Hawaii. The company is the largest freight forwarder serving the Hawaiian Islands and Guam from its base in Southern California.
