HONOLULU (AP) - Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle has signed a bill restricting retailers from distributing plastic bags.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Thursday that the partial ban will take effect in July 2015.
The law will still allow plastic bags to be distributed to package produce, flowers, laundry or other special items.
Oahu was the only main Hawaiian island without at least a partial ban before the law was passed. Businesses could be fined up to $1,000 per day for violating the restrictions.
