Blind allegiance leads to complacency

May 12, 2012
The Maui News

Questions are the answers. A May 8 letter writer has publicly repeated himself ad nauseam, insulting, cursing and demeaning the president of the United States.

Is this kind of behavior a demonstration of freedom or freedoom? Liberty or slavery? Knowledge or incomprehension? Courage or cowardice? Respect or hate? Fairness or fanaticism? Patriotism or armchair Rambo-ism?

Blind allegiance to an ideology chloroforms anyone's decision-making process, where words take precedence over deeds. Perseverance becomes obstinacy. A strong will is replaced by a strong won't. One can no longer function as a free individual, for the ideal is ever their master and mental impotence sets in.

Slogans, labels, profanities become the tools du jour. They are the hallmarks of conversational cripples and those sending their marching orders.

Complacent and comfortable, there is now more time for "The Search for Bigfoot" and "Hollywood Housewife" on television land.

The cartoon printed directly above the May 8 letter brought some balance to the Opinion page and timely apropos.
