Crimes affect the entire community

May 16, 2012
The Maui News

A person who assaults, steals and attacks other people isn't right. We're supposed to be showing aloha for everyone, especially here on the island of Maui. Respect is something that you have to earn, not something you can get overnight.

Recently, adults have been charged with sexual assaults and stealing. It doesn't just affect one person, it affects the whole community. We have to remember to lock our cars, lock up our house at night and put on the security system.

These events not only leave the victims paranoid but everyone around them as well.

Yes, things like this happen everywhere. However, as a young adult, I feel the adults who are supposed to be protecting us are the ones hurting us. We are supposed to be expressing aloha to one another, not attacking, not stealing and not assaulting. It is something that we can work on so that it may not happen as often or maybe ever again.

The trust and respect no longer exists here throughout our people. If the generations before us were to look at us now, how do you think they would react? Think about it.
