May 16, 2012
The Maui News

Vessel safety check inspections and emergency beacon testing will be done at events in Kahului and Lahaina as part of National Safe Boating Week starting Saturday.

The week kicks off at the Kahului Small Boat Ramp with testing, information and boat displays from 8 to noon Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Coast Guard Station Maui and U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office will be participating.

The events will also include identification and contact stickers for canoes and kayaks, information on life jackets, boating safety and other boating classes, and federal and state rules and regulations.

The Coast Guard's 25-foot response boat and a Coast Guard Auxiliary boat will be on display.

A similar event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 26 at Lahaina Cannery Mall. The Coast Guard Auxiliary's "Coastie The Safety Boat" youth education, boating and water safety program will be part of the event.
