For the past 12 years, student athletes have been featured under the Sports Spotlight on the pages of The Maui News.
Sponsored by Alexander & Baldwin in cooperation with the Maui Interscholastic League and The Maui News, Sports Spotlight showcases high school athletes who are also outstanding students and citizens.
Last Monday, A&B put on its annual Athlete Recognition Reception at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. At the reception, this year's Sports Spotlight athletes were gathered together and honored. Some 84 athletes from schools on Maui, Molokai and Lanai were feted. The reception also recognized all the high school coaches who had championship teams this year.
Parents and teachers gathered to applaud the high school students who were honored during the year. A&B then served the gathering a buffet of heavy pupus.
We were struck once again by how bright, talented and polite every single one of these young adults appeared. If they are representative of our youth, the future of Maui County is in very good hands.
Boys and girls from every high school in Maui County are featured in Sports Spotlight. They are chosen by their coaches, not only for their athletic prowess but also for their student citizenship. In other words, these are not just very good athletes, they are also well-rounded students.
Each athlete received a certificate commemorating his or her selection.
In addition to the certificates for the athletes, A&B makes cash grants of $200 on behalf of each student to his or her school's athletic department. To date, A&B has contributed over $120,000 to Maui schools in the name of Sports Spotlight athletes.
As the school year draws to a close, it is inspiring to see these leaders of tomorrow gathered together in one place. On behalf of The Maui News, we extend our heartiest congratulations to all of this year's Sports Spotlight Athletes of the Week.
We'd also like to thank A&B and the MIL for partnering with us on this program. The student athletes we saw Monday night are certainly deserving of the spotlight shone on them.
