Waves take toll on highway

May 22, 2012
The Maui News
Erosion damage caused by ocean waves has undermined the Kihei-bound shoulder of Honoapiilani Highway near Launiupoko State Park and created a crack in the asphalt pavement. That lane of traffic will be closed until repairs can be made; there will be contraflow through the Lahaina-bound lane, according to the state Department of Transportation. The lane closure will run on Honoapiilani Highway from Front Street to Kai Hele Ku Street. Speed limits will be reduced approaching the work zone. Motorists are advised to expect delays and to follow all posted traffic control devices. The timetable for repair and cost estimates will be determined following a full assessment, which is currently under way, the Transportation Department said.
