KAHULUI - Organizers announced contest winners for the Maui Matsuri Japanese cultural festival held May 11 and 12 on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus.
The results are as follows:
* Sam Sato Saimin eating contest adult division: First, Tyler Orikasa; second, Kurt Miyahira; third, Barry Kurasaki. Youth division: First, Dean Omura; second, Kevin Yokoyama; third, Thomas Vu-Tran Iwamoto.
* Natto (fermented soybeans) eating contest adult division: First, Ryan Yoshimoto; second, Ezra Erb; third, Myles Matsuda. Youth division: First, Devynn Leigh Kochi; second, Omura; third, Preston Watanabe.
* Hale Mahaolu Hanafuda contest advanced division: First, Becky Lau; Beginning division: First, Melbert Ulep.
* Manga contest 3rd-5th grade: First, Joshua Krueger; second, Emelie Gardanier. 6th-8th grade: First, Alyssa Fusato; second, Aubrey Unemori; third, Laura Dodson. 9th-12th grade: First, Rhiannon Hernandez; second, Sabrina Futch: third, Kimilyn Yoshizawa.
* Traditional art contest 6th-8th grade: First, Alyssa Fusato; second, Makai Mossman; third, Helen Soyoung Chong. 9th-12th grade: First, Cameron Moore; second, Lady-lyn Dasmarinas: third, Dasmarinas.
* Cosplay contest (contestants dress up as anime or manga characters), hallway cosplay: First, Marc Cabalo; second, Kochi; third, Holly Weisel.
* Cosplay showcase winners: First, Jean Dadson; second, Kela Kithowski; third, Lilian Figgeroa-Ernzei.
