WAILUKU - Registration for the Wailuku Hongwanji Gakuen (Japanese language school) will be held June 9 at the temple from 2 to 4 p.m.
The school will follow the public school calendar year, beginning Aug. 1.
Classes are 35 minutes and start at 1:45 p.m. Wednesdays and 2:30 p.m. all other weekdays.
Programs are offered for children from kindergarten to 8th grade. The school will teach writing, reading, speaking and Japanese folk songs. Students also will have an opportunity to use a computer to type hiragana and katakana, a kind of Japanese alphabet, and kanji or Chinese characters.
Students will have an opportunity to experience Japanese culture, such as mochi and sushi making, origami and calligraphy, as well.
The registration fee is $25 and tuition is $55 per month. Textbooks and other learning materials may be purchased at registration.
Bus service is available for students from Kahului, Wailuku, Waihee, Lihikai and Pomaikai elementary schools.
Parents also may register their children before June 9 at the temple, 1828 Vineyard St.
