Use of legs, feet key for climbers

Kody Calvan, 10, of Wailuku tries to climb a greased pole Saturday during the 43rd annual Barrio Fiesta at the War Memorial Complex soccer field. In the early rounds, climbers focused on toweling off grease and using dirt to gain enough traction to make the climb possible. Kody, who won the pole-climbing competition in 2010, said the trick is for climbers to use their legs and feet to shimmy up the pole. After several rounds with 11 keiki competitors, the winner was Jayda Cortez, 9, of Kahului.
