Protesters shop their views to passing drivers

June 1, 2012
The Maui News
Kihei protesters, including Daniel Kanahele (foreground), wave signs along Piilani Highway on Thursday afternoon in opposition to the construction of Piilani Promenade, a proposed 400,000-square-foot shopping center on 68 acres of land in South Maui. With a bulldozer parked in the background ready to begin work, the protesters were speaking out against the planned development of the property. Kanahele said the plans to build an outlet mall and other large stores do not meet current zoning or approved land use designations. “They haven’t followed the process,” Kanahele said. “People haven’t had a chance to weigh in on this development.” The Maui Tomorrow Foundation, South Maui Citizens for Responsible Growth and Kihei resident Daniel Kanahele have filed appeals with county and state agencies, contending that the light-industrial project approved in 1999 for then-landowner Kaonoulu Ranch is not what’s being developed by current owner Eclipse Development Group.
