Meeting to focus on proposed shopping center

June 1, 2012
The Maui News

Are you aware that the largest shopping mall in the state - yes, larger than Queen Ka'ahumanu and Ala Moana - is proposed in north Kihei mauka of Piilani Highway? Have you viewed Eclipse Development Group's websites, eclipsedevelopmentgroup.com/CS_maui.htm and eclipsedevelopmentgroup.com/CS_maui_outlets.htm, to examine what is proposed?

This project has generated more community interest in South Maui than anything else for the past several years.

Therefore, the Kihei Community Association will devote the entire June 19 public community meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Kihei Charter School, 41 E. Lipoa St., to this topic.

KCA has invited Eclipse Development Group CEO/President Doug Gray, Director of Development Paul Bernard and CFO Peter Dunn to participate.

Do you see this as a huge economic opportunity to generate retail jobs or a way to squash existing small Kihei business? Is this a potential environmental disaster or a way to create construction jobs for unemployed Maui workers? Does a mile-long retail center just mauka of the Piilani Highway sound like a great place to shop, or do 38,000 cars per day and additional traffic lights sound like a nightmare?

If you have an opinion, why not share it with the community on that Tuesday evening?

KCA has a continuing food drive for the Maui Food Bank, so please bring a few cans of nonperishable food to the meeting. For more information, see www.gokihei.org or call 879-5390.
