Maria Lanakila pastor retiring

LAHAINA - Father Gary Colton, pastor of Maria Lanakila Parish in Lahaina, will be retiring June 30.

Colton has served in several parishes on Maui for the past 44 years. He also is a Maui Police Department chaplain.

The Maria Lanakila parish will celebrate Colton's service on June 29 at The Ritz Carlton, Kapalua at 5:30 p.m.

The deadline to purchase tickets for the event is June 22. Tickets are $25.

Akinaka called to serve as bishop

MAKAWAO - Elias Akinaka was called as bishop of the Makawao Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday.

The Maui High School graduate, who is the son of Vance and Linda Akinaka, served a mission in Sapporo, Japan. He and his wife, Birlinda, have seven children. Prior to his call, Akinaka was 1st counselor of the Makawao Ward.

Bishop Akinaka has called Jared Mateaki as his 1st counselor and Elias Kaholoa'a as his 2nd counselor.

Mateaki and his wife, Kazuko, have six children. He is the son of Lynne and the late Sosaia.

Kaholoa'a and his wife, Ululani, have three children. His parents are William and Caroline Kaholoa'a of Molokai.

Free Vacation Bible School offered

PUKALANI - Games, Bible stories, memory verses, music and dinner will be part of a free Vacation Bible School from 5 to 7:30 p.m. June 11 to 15 at Pukalani Baptist Church.

A free dinner will be served from 5 to 5:30 p.m. each day.

Children who have completed preschool through 12th-grade are invited to attend.
