WAILUKU -- A 4-year-old Wailuku boy was diagnosed with injuries including a bleeding bowel and lacerated pancreas when he was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room Tuesday night, just hours before he died the following morning, according to court records.

In an autopsy done the following day, the Maui County coroner's physician determined that Zion McKeown died of blunt force trauma to his lower abdomen.

The boy's father, Kyle McKeown, 32, and his live-in girlfriend, Grace Lee-Nakamoto, 27, have been charged with second-degree murder in the boy's death.

The two made initial appearances this afternoon in 2nd Circuit Family Court.
