As our bus system is planning to raise rates, I would like to see the tourists absorb any increase.
Most of us who live on Maui and ride the bus cannot afford a car or gas prices, whereas tourists, who can afford to visit Maui, are getting very cheap sightseeing. They can afford to come here whereas most of us cannot afford to go where they are from.
Could a kamaaina card be considered that is obtained by proving our residency and used to flash the bus drivers to obtain a local rate?
