Keeping balls in the air takes practice

June 8, 2012
The Maui News
Internationally acclaimed basketball trickster Joe Odhiambo spins one ball on his finger and juggles two others while performing for Basketball Maui campers at War Memorial Gym on Thursday morning. “I am the world’s greatest ballhandler,” the former Grand Canyon University player said. “I hold 14 Guinness world records.” He told the young players that he earned those records for dribbling and spinning basketballs by putting in the time and hard work to improve. He said he helps NBA players, including the Phoenix Suns’ Steve Nash, work on their ballhandling skills. Odhiambo is scheduled to perform before the start of Saturday’s “Night of Shooting Stars” at Lahaina Civic Center. The pro game, which is scheduled to include Rudy Gay and Jeremy Pargo of the Memphis Grizzlies, begins at 6 p.m. It will be preceded by a celebrity all-star game starting at 5 p.m. The five-day Basketball Maui camp has drawn 280 kids, training in five gyms around the island.
