38 species in Maui County proposed for endangered list

June 11, 2012
The Maui News

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed today to add 38 species found on Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Maui to the federal endangered species list.

The service also is seeking to designate 271,062 acres on the four islands as critical habitats for various species that are threatened or endangered.

The majority of the proposed endangered species are plants. There are three animal species, which are the Newcomb's tree snail and two Lanai tree snails.

Public comments on the proposal will be accepted until Aug. 10. For more information and to review the proposal, visit www.fws.gov/pacificislands.
