Matson receives marine award

HONOLULU - The largest company that ships goods from the Mainland to Hawaii has received a marine environmental protection award from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Matson Navigation Company Inc. says this is the second time the company has received the Coast Guard's Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Award for Excellence.

Matson first received the biennial award in 2006.

Matson President Matt Cox says environmental stewardship is important for a company serving some of the most pristine environments including Hawaii, Guam and California.

Cox says Matson is the only carrier in the world to have a zero discharge policy, meaning that nothing is discharged into the ocean except for food scraps.
