Recently, I witnessed two different drivers go ballistic when interminably obstructed by the numerous bicycle tours down Baldwin Avenue, the narrow, winding road that is the only link between Makawao and Paia.
I found this both frightening yet understandable, as drivers' needs are simply not considered equal to the bike companies' slim profit margin.
The danger to the cyclists is horrific and when the next inevitable accident occurs - hopefully not another fatality - I suggest that the full responsibility belong to the Maui County Council. Permitting this endangers both drivers and cyclists on a road that Maui taxpayers pay for and use to get to and from work. Why not require the bike companies to pay a toll to cover the cost of a safe bike path independent of the road? The remains of one still exist and could be renovated.
In the meantime, how is it that so many home business opportunities, bed-and-breakfasts, etc., are now illegal while this unbelievably dangerous practice is allowed to continue?
