Mitt Romney did not seek a deferment

June 14, 2012
The Maui News

When given information that proves an accusation isn't true, leftists will avoid facts and just reissue, as a June 5 letter writer did.

Mitt Romney signed his Selective Service card at age 18 (1966), went on a mission for the Mormon Church at age 19, was in a severe car accident at age 21 - hit by a drunken driver (declared dead at the scene) - and fully recovered by age 24, at a point where the Vietnam War was winding down (1972). The chance of being drafted in any particular year was 15 percent.

The Mormon Church's policy from 1965 until the end of the draft was that any member who was drafted had to return to serve.

There is no record of Romney seeking deferment. If he did after age 21, it would be for medical reasons related to his car accident.

Millions who signed a Selective Service card did not get drafted. Obviously, no family influence was applied.

The letter writer is just wrong. If the letter writer had a record of Romney seeking deferment, he would have provided the website or government site where this is. He did not.
