DOT to hear input on Kahului Harbor development

June 15, 2012
The Maui News

KAHULUI - State Department of Transportation officials will hear public input Tuesday on conceptual proposals for the Kahului Harbor development plan.

Those include demolishing the Old Kahului Store and acquiring more land for cargo space at the harbor.

The public informational meeting will begin with an open house at 5:30 p.m. and a formal presentation at 6 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Alexa Higashi meeting room.

Other alternative harbor development proposals include creating space for less-than-container-sized loads and state Department of Agriculture inspectors and adaptive reuse of the Old Railroad Building for the Harbors Division Office and harbor user office space.

Department spokesman Derek Inoshita said the proposals are in their early stages of consideration.

"It's still all just in the conceptual stage," he said. "We want to make sure the public is advised of all possible uses of the property."

The state owns 74 acres of land at Kahului Harbor, Inoshita said.

For more information, contact Sandra Rossetter of the state Harbors Division at (808) 587-1886. Anyone needing special accommodations, such as sign language interpretation, should contact Rossetter by today.
