Defendants’ release is unacceptable

June 16, 2012
The Maui News

"Couple charged in child's death freed from jail" (The Maui News, June 6) read the headline. What in the world is our justice system coming to? Oh, and yes, please don't have anything to do with any minor children and, by the way, turn in your passports.

Are you kidding me? These people have been charged with murder. Are our children of no value any more? Is the judge going to go home with these two to be sure they are not in the company of minor children?

I'm sorry, but this is unacceptable to me. These defendants are a danger to our community. They are free to do as they please. God forbid they lose control and kill another child or adult who gets in the path of their anger and or careless disregard for human life.

I understand that building a solid case against these defendants is vitally important, but putting the community in danger for any amount of time is beyond my comprehension.

I ask all my fellow residents of Maui County and the entire state to speak out now. The release of these defendants is unacceptable. I consider this a failure to protect our community.

Five children die every day in the United States as a result of child abuse. They have no voice. Today I will speak for Zion and say: "Do not let my death be in vain. Protect the children."
