5,000 watch parade on Front St.

LAHAINA - Riding a white horse and wearing a flowing red and pink gown, Maui's Ashley Lehuanani Branco took top honors Saturday in the Pa'u Princess Division of the 2012 Na Kamehameha Commemorative Pa'u Parade in Lahaina.

The runner-up in the Princess Division was Jamie Moanikeala Whittle-Wagner, riding with the Oahu Pa'u unit; and third place went to Charmaine Puanani Kalanui Chun, of the Molokai unit.

In the Pa'u Unit Division, first place was awarded to the Kauai Unit, with Charlene Smith and Ohana Smith; second went to Whittle-Wagner and Ohana Wagner; and third place was taken by Chun and Ohana Ka'anapali Beach Hotel.

The Pooperscooper Division was won by the Family of Maui Island Riders.

The parade crowd turnout, more than 5,000 people, was greater than last year, said Maui Police Department spokesman Lt. Wayne Ibarra.
