Wind keeps crews from inspection
A "handful" of Maui Electric Co. customers near the summit of Haleakala remained without power Monday evening as strong winds kept the utility from sending a helicopter to inspect electrical lines.
Power went out in the area around 12:30 a.m. Monday.
"Accessibility to some of our power lines in this area is very difficult," Maui Electric spokeswoman Kau'i Awai-Dickson said. "We are hopeful that the wind will die down (Tuesday) to allow us access by helicopter. Once the problem is identified, MECO will work to resolve the situation and restore power."

Official to speak on discrimination
KAHULUI - A U.S. Department of Justice official will speak from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Christ the King Church about reducing illegal employment discrimination on Maui.
Sebastian Aloot is the acting special litigation counsel for the department's Civil Rights Division's Office of Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices, according to an event announcement.
Aloot began his career in 1975 and has held positions at state and international levels, including chairman of the Republic of the Marshall Islands Nuclear Claims Tribunal, acting attorney general for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and director of the Hawaiian Rights Division for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

Park will hold informational event
KIPAHULU - Haleakala National Park officials will host a community informational meeting beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Visitor Center in Kipahulu.
Participants can meet park staff, learn more about the park and follow up on previously discussed topics.

Shipwreck expert to give presentations
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will host two free presentations by maritime archaeologist and historian Hans Van Tilberg on shipwrecks in Hawaiian waters.
The presentations will include a photo slideshow, and cover 19th-century whaling vessels, World War II-era landing craft and submarines.
The events will be 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Whalers Museum at Whalers Village in Kaanapali, and 6 p.m. Monday at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary in Kihei.
