Two years ago the Maui Chamber of Commerce stepped in and led fundraising efforts to save the 4th of July fireworks show in Lahaina.
It is a family event. Front Street is closed off, and a traditional Independence Day is celebrated. Last year some 20,000 people attended.
The only catch is that it is an expensive event to stage. According to a story in this paper, the chamber has a fundraising goal of $51,000 - the fireworks alone will cost $30,000. Security, port-a-potties, permits and insurance add to the tab.
Chamber President Pamela Tumpap was quoted as saying, "It is not just a west side event; it is a community event . . . people skip up and down the street and have the time of their lives.
"We are the only major fireworks display on the Fourth of July on Maui."
Donations are being sought from businesses and individuals. Tumpap pointed out that Front Street businesses will be "doing gangbusters" during that evening and asked them in particular to help with the funding.
Tumpap said securing the money for the event is always close, and that "we're going to be fundraising up to the end."
The chamber president said donors can secure pledge sheets on the chamber's website (www.mauichamber.com), by calling 244-0081, or sending email to office@mauichamber.com.
We'd urge everyone to step up and make a donation to keep the tradition of the 4th of July Fireworks Show going on Maui.
