I am absolutely disgusted by this national trend of not feeding the hungry. There are cities and towns all across the United States of America that have out and out banned charities and citizens from feeding the homeless and hungry. Some places are even going so far as arresting people for sharing their own food - like offering someone a bite of their sandwich.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie is moving closer to an actual ban, currently discouraging others who feed the homeless and hungry, basically saying, "You need to feed their souls, not their stomachs." How out of touch is that?
There are serious consequences to malnutrition and people die from starvation. The outer islands are suffering huge unemployment, and we have hungry families. If we don't feed them, regardless of their other potential problems and use a "feeding their souls instead" excuse, we have become inhumane and soulless ourselves. It is our responsibility to make sure this never happens in Hawaii, and to see to it that this trend not only stops but is reversed immediately.
Call our representatives: Sen. Daniel Inouye, (202) 224-3934 or (808) 541-2542; Sen. Daniel Akaka, (202) 224-6361 or (808) 522-8970; Rep. Maize Hirono, (202) 225-4906 or (808) 541-1986; Abercrombie, (808) 586-0034; the White House, (202) 456-1414.
Lastly, go feed the homeless and hungry and remember that you live in a time where this act of simple human kindness has now become an act of courage.
