What is a mushroom that likes to party? Why, it's a . . . "FUNGI!"

"Fun guy!" Get it?

There's a Maui woodworker, Cole Warren, aka a "fun guy," who will be the featured artist at the Maui Crafts Guild in Paia from Friday to July 22.

Maui woodworker Cole Warren will be the featured artist at the Maui Crafts Guild in Paia starting Friday through July 22.

You can meet the artist during an opening reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday. It's all part of the festivities at the gallery and store to be held in conjunction with Paia Town's monthly Fourth Friday celebration.

Refreshments and live music by Upcountry Celtics will take it over the top.

Cole's exhibition will feature works made with spalted Maui woods. "Spalting" is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi growth.

Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur under stressed conditions, even in living trees.

"You just never know how amazing the spalting is until you cut into the wood," says Cole. "It's like opening a box of chocolates!"

For this show, Cole has created inspirational wood turnings as well as utensils, desk accessories, and tables from Maui's woods that tend to spalt. Come and feast your senses in Paia on this special evening!

The Maui Crafts Guild is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 579-9697 or visit the website www.mauicraftsguild.com.

Other special Fourth Friday art happenings include watercolorist Amanda Scott, who will paint portraits at Maui Hands (the gallery is also offering 10 percent off Chad Durgan's mix-metal jewelry,)

There will be a new exhibit at Viewpoints Gallery on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao from June 29 to Aug. 1, says its director Oliver Perz. Meet the artists at the opening reception.

"Janet Davis lives her artwork, recording life on the islands with delightful childlike charm that evokes energy, joy, and innocent abandon," says Perz.

The other featured artists are Debbie Brown, who does white ware from her dream images; Rona Smith, who designs bead work with natural wonders of the world; and Joan Davis, creator of quilts using hand dyed and batik fabrics. For more details, call 572-5979.

The Lahaina Arts Society will hold its annual celebration and meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Pioneer Inn courtyard. The public is invited. Live music by Barefoot Minded will run from 6 to 7 p.m.

Light pupu will be offered with refreshments and a no host open bar will be available. Guest speakers will be Joan McKelvey, lifetime member of LAS; Zeke Kalua, representing the Mayor's office; and Al Harty, president of LAS. The society showcases, supports, teaches, mentors and nurtures all Maui County artists. Call 661-0111.
