Training for tricky situations

June 22, 2012
The Maui News

First Photo: Firefighter Mike McDonald uses a hydraulic spreader to pry open the door of a wrecked car Thursday as Maui Fire Department personnel conduct vehicle extrication training at Hammerhead Metals Recycling in Puunene. Looking on is instructor Sandy Parker, who is a driver for the Wailea Station.

Second Photo: Parker (at the door in the photo) said that in four months of training, 210 Maui County firefighters have cut apart 170 wrecks. He thanked Hammerhead for providing the vehicles before they are recycled and also for arranging them each morning in various positions so that the crews can practice different rescue scenarios. "They call it good experience," said Hammerhead supervisor Nick Garofalo. "Whatever we can do to help them get faster, better trained, we're here to help."
