WAILUKU - A 30-year-old man was being held on $6,000 bail at the Wailuku Police Station on Thursday morning after he resisted arrest and punched a police officer in the face early Wednesday, police said.
Steven Moylan, who has no local address, was charged with assault against a police officer and resisting arrest, police records show.
Around 12:29 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a disorderly conduct case and found a man with black shorts and no shirt yelling and ranting while in the shower at the Rainbow Surf Hostel along Baldwin Avenue in Paia, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.
He said police reported that the man exhibited "bizarre behavior." Initially witnesses called police after seeing the man being disorderly in the middle of the street in the area of the hostel.
When police tried to restrain the man, he punched an officer in the mouth, Rego said. The officer sustained a laceration to his lip and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The man was taken to the emergency room at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where a toxicology test was done but showed no drugs in the man's system, Rego said.
