KAHULUI - Nominations are currently being accepted for the Palaka Award, presented to a longtime Maui County nonprofit organization volunteer leader.

The deadline for nominations is Sunday. Nominees must have seven years' minimum service "exemplifying the highest service ideals to their nonprofit organization, demonstrating Rotary Club's motto 'Service Above Self' and significant, enduring impact," said a news release about the award, presented by the Kahului Rotary Club in honor of Mike Lyons.

Lyons, who was known for his palaka shirts, was a Kahului Rotarian, District 5000 governor and a community leader. He was the longtime Maui District manager for Bank of Hawaii.

Last year's winner was Helen Nielsen of the Maui Land Trust.

Nominations may be submitted online at the Kahului Rotary website at www.kahuluirotary.com. Finalists and the 2012 honoree will be selected by a committee of the Kahului Rotary.

The 2012 Palaka Award winner will be announced by the Kahului Rotary Club on Aug. 24 at an annual luncheon ceremony benefiting the Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Scholarship Fund. The event will be held in King Kamehameha Golf Club's Waikapu Room.

In addition, a fundraising golf ball drop is planned prior to the luncheon at noon. Participants are requested to make a cash donation for numbered golf balls, which are dropped by a helicopter on a target green at the golf club. The owner of the golf ball landing closest to the target flag is the grand prize winner of a five-day Napa Valley getaway. Other prizes will be awarded.

For detailed information regarding Palaka Award nominations, the awards luncheon, sponsorships and the golf ball drop, go to the Kahului Rotary website.
