Filing error leads to tax snafu

June 26, 2012
The Maui News

WAILUKU - A third party payroll service provider inadvertently failed to file employee W-2s for county employees for tax year 2010, county Director of Finance Danny Agsalog said Monday.

Although all taxes were paid and all tax returns were appropriately filed, ADP did not file the 2010 individual employee W-2s. Since this discovery, ADP has filed the 2010 W-2s with both the federal and state governments.

Tax year 2010 was the first year of payroll implementation with ADP; there are no similar issues for 2011.

Some county employees have received notices from the Internal Revenue Service indicating a mismatch between what they filed on their returns for taxes paid and what was filed by the county.

The Social Security Administration does not yet reflect 2010 wages for purposes of calculating Social Security benefits, a county news release said.

The county and ADP are working with the IRS, the state Department of Taxation and the Social Security Administration to remedy this situation.

It also is possible that some county employees may receive a similar communication from the state.

County employees who have received communication from the IRS or any other taxing authority and/or who are currently collecting Social Security benefits and earned wages from the county in 2010 should contact Payroll Manager Danielle Navarro at 270-7499.
