Chiarella wins third King Auto Group title

KAILUA-KONA - Alex Chiarella of Pukalani won the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association's King Auto Group State Championship boys 15-18 division title for a third straight year on Wednesday, closing with 72 for a 138 total and one-shot win over Skye Inakoshi of Honolulu.

Chiarella's 66 in Tuesday's first round matched the best score of the tournament at The Club at Hokulia. The recent Seabury Hall graduate, who will play at the University of San Diego on a golf scholarship, won a second Maui Interscholastic League title this year, and was the runner-up in the state high school tournament.

Jameson Keiley of Haiku (77) tied for third with a 147 total. Lahaina's Aaron Kunitomo (77) tied for ninth at 152.

In the boys 13-14 division, Justin Ngan placed second with a 150 total after a second-round 74, one shot behind Honolulu's Andrew Chin (73).

Kimberlie Miyamoto of Kahului tied for eighth in the girls 15-18 division, closing with a 78 to finish at 158. Honolulu's Eimi Koga (73) won with a 146.

Maui United goes 6-1 in two tournaments

The Maui United boys 13 team went 6-1 in two Washington-state tournaments this month, including a championship run at the Skagit Valley Tournament during which Maui outscored its opponents 23-0 in four games.

At the Skagit Valley event June 16-17, Maui beat TSS Academy Canada 7-0 in the championship game - Maui defeated the same team 5-0 earlier in the tournament, and also had wins of 7-0 over the Whatcom Rangers and 4-0 over Northwest United Powell.

Last weekend, playing the the super elite division at the U.S. Club regionals in Seattle, Maui defeated the Seattle Fury 3-2 and won 1-0 over FC Gunners of Seattle before a 2-1 loss to the Washington Rush.

Powers aces No. 6 at Dunes at Maui Lani

KAHULUI - Dana Powers of Kihei recorded a hole-in-one during a Triple-X Golf Group event Saturday at The Dunes at Maui Lani.

Powers aced the sixth hole, using a 7-iron for the 149-yard shot, which was witnessed by Trent Minor, John Hellum and Art Ortiz.

Okuda records Elleair hole-in-one

KIHEI - Darryl T. Okuda of Kahului, a range attendant at Elleair Maui Golf Club, recorded a hole-in-one on the club's seventh hole Tuesday.

Okuda used a 4-hybrid for the 165-yard ace, which was witnessed by Mayumi Roggow, Mira Kyung and Dugal Milne.

Maui High bowling registration scheduled

WAILUKU - The Maui High School bowling team will conduct registration on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in July, after 12:30 p.m. each day, at the Maui Bowling Center.

Basketball league accepting players

WAILUKU - The Maui Youth Basketball League is taking applications for its 2012 fall league, for boys and girls born in years 1997 to 2006. Volunteer coaches and referees are also needed.

Applications are available at The Sports Authority, Maui Sporting Goods and the Central Maui county permits office, or by emailing cssuzuki@hawaiiantel.net. The deadline to apply is Aug. 5.

Games will be played on Sundays, starting Sept. 9, in Central Maui.
