Moped, scooter riders should follow traffic laws

June 30, 2012
The Maui News

Have you driven down South Kihei Road lately? If you have, you have noticed the large amount of mopeds and scooters. Some are rentals and some are just people's way to get from one place to another.

My problem is with the zooming in and out of the driving lane onto the bicycle lane when traffic slows. They don't follow the speed limit or the traffic laws, and certainly make the road more dangerous for all drivers and bicyclists.

After a collision with one while my daughter was turning right - with her turn signal on - and after the tourist behind her mentioned to the police officer that the scooter was going way over 20 miles an hour, he informed them that the scooter doesn't have to follow the traffic laws.

I don't think so.

We need to decide where mopeds and scooters should be traveling and indicate laws to all rental companies and make sure they inform their clients.

Everyone else, please take care.
