Mayor Alan Arakawa and the County Council members support "National Walking Day" by encouraging people to walk to work in April and to walk with them one day each month of the year. They support "Complete Streets" and "making Maui a leader in health prevention." And, yet, the same individuals are supporting the unsafe mega-mall construction in Kihei (The Maui News, June 21). What happened to making all of Maui healthy?
Our mayor and council members have an opportunity to support and create a greenway for exercise, safe streets and access along the mauka side of Piilani Highway. The time is now to require that the landowners of the mega-malls meet 2012 road, pedestrian and safety conditions. We should be improving our living conditions, not contaminating them.
Will the public officials realize this and become a true voice for the people of Maui and our visitors?
