Republicans targeting President Obama

July 1, 2012
The Maui News

At age 20 in 1960, I couldn't vote for president, but I certainly was then and continue to be involved in politics.

I do not ever remember spokespeople of the party not in power declaring immediately their prime overriding objective - instead of governing - was to make certain of a one-term presidency.

No modern president has faced hurdles President Barack Obama has had thrown against him. The RepublicaNO Party has thwarted any plausible opportunity to deal with issues ranging from economic recovery to ending unpopular wars.

Now Mitt Romney and his 1 percent buddies have the chutzpah to accuse the president of a failed administration. Nonsense. They lie about Obama having huge majorities in both House and Senate. Blather.

If there is failure, it is one of democracy being distorted. Our Founding Fathers did not intend for us to be governed by a super-majority mandating a 60 percent plurality for every key vote in the Senate. Use of the filibuster traditionally was rare; now the GOP resorts to it almost daily.

Meanwhile, big problems only fester. Very sad.
