WAILUKU - A Wailuku man and woman charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of the man's 4-year-old son both pleaded not guilty to the charge during arraignment in 2nd Circuit Court on Monday afternoon.
Trial is set for Sept. 17 for Kyle McKeown, 32, and Grace Lee-Nakamoto, 27, who were both indicted Friday by a grand jury.
In separate arraignments Monday, both defendants were ordered not to have any contact with each other if they posted bail. They also were ordered to dispose of all firearms and ammunition.
McKeown, the father of 4-year-old Zion McKeown who died at Maui Memorial Medical Center, did not ask for a bail study so no bail hearing was set.
But a bail hearing for Lee-Nakamoto, McKeown's live-in girlfriend, is set for Friday.
The two are being held on $1 million bail at Maui Community Correctional Center.
McKeown and Lee-Nakamoto took an unresponsive Zion to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room at 10:55 p.m. May 29. The couple and the boy had been living at the Hale Kono apartments on Vineyard Street.
The boy died at 4:30 a.m. May 30, with preliminary autopsy findings showing his injuries to his abdomen were most likely caused by "someone stomping on him while he was lying on the ground," according to an affidavit.
