This letter is in response to a June 23 letter: I respect the comments made by the letter writer, but want to set the record straight about the Maui 2nd Congressional debate hosted by Akaku.
In my role as Maui County coordinator for Hannemann for Congress, I received the verbal invite to attend this debate on May 5, minutes before the Maui County Democratic Convention began. I shared that I would forward the request and would respond. Minutes later, during that same convention, it was announced that this televised debate would be held by Akaku.
The organizers of the debate did not check for available dates with our campaign and announced the debate before we even had an opportunity to communicate that the date was not available and that the candidate would be on another island on that date.
Mufi Hannemann is on Maui on a consistent and regular basis, meeting and talking story with residents of Maui County. Add to the fact that the three most recent Maui County mayors and a sitting council member have endorsed him lends credence to the fact that he has a record of helping our county through the years and would serve us well in Congress.
