HGEA grants six scholarships

July 4, 2012
The Maui News

The Hawaii Government Employees Association, the state's largest labor union, recently awarded six Maui students with its HGEA Charles R. Kendall and Russell K. Okata Scholarships for HGEA members or dependents who are attending or plan to attend a college, university, or vocational or trade school on a full-time basis.

Students receiving $2,500 scholarships are Cheyenne K. Pico and Shyela L. Stephens. Students receiving $1,500 scholarships are Celina J.K. Hayashi, Jennifer M. Lum, Joveline A. Ollero and Michael J. Teves.

The recipients were selected based on financial need, academic ability, a personal letter and recommendations.

The scholarships are named in honor of Kendall and Okata, who both worked to improve the lives of public employees.

Throughout the year, the HGEA C. R. Kendall Fundraising Committee, composed of HGEA members, holds a variety of events and activities on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island to raise funds for the Charles R. Kendall Scholarship and Education Trust Fund.
