July 6, 2012
The Maui News
Charlotte Smith poses with Bertram Ikaika Kai captains (from right) Kamal Pfeifle and Neil Preston, as well as Atul Madan (left), after catching a 915-pound blue marlin on Monday off the Palaoa Point lighthouse on Lanai’s southwest corner. The fish was the third-largest blue marlin on record caught by a female angler since 1980, and the 14th-largest overall for Lahaina or Maalaea since 1972 — as well as the harbors’ biggest since 2008. More than 6 1/2 hours were needed to land the fish, which measured 14 feet from the tip of the bill to the tail, with a 36-inch half-shoulder girth.
