KIHEI - Curbside recycling will be coming to all of Maui Meadows and other parts of South Maui beginning with deliveries of two new colored carts Saturday.
Other deliveries will be on July 21 and 28. The new carts for about 1,600 residences in the project's first phase will be accompanied by an information packet. There is no extra cost for county refuse subscribers.
Then, on the week of Aug. 13, the county will switch to the "3 Can Plan," according to Maui County fliers distributed to residents.

Beginning Saturday, county workers will distribute new recycling carts — one blue, one green — to about 1,600 South Maui residents. The blue cart will be for mixed recyclables, and the green cart will be for organic waste from yards and kitchens. The new containers will begin getting picked up curbside on the week of Aug. 13.

The brown/gray cart will continue to be used for rubbish, but selected residents also will receive two additional 96-gallon wheeled carts - blue and green - plus a small kitchen compost caddy.
The blue cart will be for mixed recyclables, and the new green cart will be for organic matter from the yard and kitchen. The kitchen compost caddy will be for select food waste that will go in the green bin.
Households will need to set up their own in-house recycling system for the collection and storage of mixed recyclables.
Pickup days and hours - between 5 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. - will remain the same. The brown/gray cart will go out on the first scheduled pickup day, followed by the blue or green cart on the second day of alternating weeks.
For example, the pickup schedule would look like this:
* Week one - first scheduled day, brown cart; second day, green cart.
* Week two - first day, brown cart; second day, blue cart.
* Week three - first day, brown cart; second day, green cart.
* Week four - first day, brown cart; second day, blue cart.
The blue cart can take items such as cardboard (flattened); paper bags; newspapers; magazines and office paper; junk mail and envelopes; milk and juice cartons; plastics Nos. 1 and 2; dairy tubs and lids; metal food cans; and aluminum cans, foil and trays.
The green cart is for leaves and grass trimmings; tree and hedge trimmings; palm fronds (cut to fit); flowers and houseplants; Christmas trees (cut to fit); fibrous vegetables and fruit peelings; rinds, pits, skins and seeds; pineapple tops and corncobs; and coffee grinds, filters and tea bags.
Items that should not be recycled in either blue or green cart include: plastic bags; glass; light bulbs; metal; rocks, dirt and gravel; eggs and eggshells; fats, grease, lard or oils; dairy products; grains and beans; meat, fish scraps or bones; pet waste or cat litter; lumber (treated or painted); food soiled paper; towels, paper plates, pizza boxes; biodegradable food containers; phone books; Styrofoam; peanuts; shredded paper; and batteries and electronics.
County officials suggest that residents make space to store the two new carts.
