The Maui News

Portions of Maui Lani Parkway were closed Monday night and Tuesday as firefighters extinguished two brush fires in Kahului, a fire official said.

The fire Tuesday burned about a half-acre of brush behind Pomaikai Elementary School, with Kahului and Wailuku firefighters responding to the 12:17 p.m. alarm, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. Both lanes of Maui Lani Parkway were initially closed, with the Wailuku-bound lane reopened at 12:40 p.m. and the other lane reopened at 12:57 p.m.

The fire was brought under control at 12:33 p.m. and extinguished at 12:55 p.m.

No monetary loss was reported. The cause was undetermined.

The fire followed one Monday night that burned about 2 acres of brush near Maui Lani Parkway and the driveway to the Maui Lani Golf Course.

Wailuku and Kahului firefighters and the Fire Department's Air One helicopter responded to the 5:16 p.m. alarm. The fire was brought under control at 6 p.m. and extinguished at 8:09 p.m., Mainaga said.

He said the fire burned up to the edge of the road about 50 feet from the nearest homes. A spot fire on the mauka side of the road was quickly extinguished by Wailuku firefighters.

No monetary loss was reported. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Maui Lani Parkway was closed between Kuihelani Highway and Hooheno Street while firefighters battled the blaze.
