Gaskell advanced through six rounds, defeating Dege O'Connell, also of Hana, 15.83-11.04 in the final of the Association of Surfing Professionals three-star event. "It was so much fun out there and I couldn't have pictured a better final, surfing with one of my best friends," Gaskell was quoted as saying on the ASP website.

Third photo: O'Connell, shown on a cutback, was quoted as saying: "I couldn't feel better. This is the first final I've ever made in a men's event and it's at a perfect point break." He earned $4,000 for the runner-up finish.
