FRIDAY, JULY 13

ALOHA SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui recently announced a long-term partnership with University of Hawaii, Maui College's Institute of Hawaiian Music (IHM). The partnership kicks off with 8 weeks of free concerts, coined the "Aloha Friday Summer Concert Series." Beginning Friday and every Friday through August 31, students from IHM will be performing in the hotel lobby between 5 and 6 p.m. The concerts are free and open to all.

'THE PRODUCERS' PLAYING AT THE IAO

A Maui OnStage production "The Producers,"?continues tonight at the Historic Iao Theater at 7:30. OBON FESTIVAL AT MANTOKUJI MISSION

Obon Festival tonight at Mantokuji Soto Mission of Paia. Service starts at 6 p.m. dancing to follow at 8 p.m. The mission is located at 253 Hana Highway, Paia.

LAHAINA SECOND FRIDAY CELEBRATION

Opening blessing by cast of Ulalena Maui at the Sea Wall across from Hard Rock Cafe will kick off festivities from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition to live music at various Lahaina restaurants and clubs there will be a concert at Campbell Park from 5 to 8 p.m. by the Haiku Hillbillys. Take advantage of merchant and restaurant special offers, enjoy presentations at art galleries and learn about the culture and history of Lahaina. Tonight's event honors fishermen for the knowledge and skills that provide Lahaina's daily "fresh catch."

A BENEFIT FOR FULTON TASHOMBE

For many years Fulton Tashombe has entertained Maui audiences with his funky soul and jazz. Now he needs a little kokua. Fulton will have a lung transplant surgery soon and a benefit concert is being organized by Maui Jazz Society president Bill Burton, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Iao Theater in Wailuku. Vibraphone legend Emil Richards will top the bill. See Maui Beat column for list of performers. Tickets may be purchased at Sir Wilfred's in Lahaina, Main Street Bistro in Wailuku, and at the door.

EBB & FLOW ARTS' 'PIANO SYNERGY'

Works for 4 pianos by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Gerald Busby, Darius Milhaud, Thomas Osborne, Gabriel Faure, Maurice Ravel, Wallace DePue and Robert Pollock. The free performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Music Conservatory at Queen Kaahumanu Center. Expert pianists are all Maui residents: Lotus Dancer, Anne Ku, Peiling Lin, Ruth Murata, Robert Pollock, and Beatrice Scorby.

NA HOKU HOU AWARD WINNERS CONCERT

Concert takes place from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Yokouchi Pavilion & Courtyard. See Maui Beat column on page 3 and 4 for details about performers. 'MAUI WALK OF HEROES' CELEBRATION

Akaku: Maui Community Television is hosting its second annual "Maui Walk of Heroes" celebration and fundraiser at Akaku Center, 333 Dairy Road in Kahului, beginning at 5 p.m. Akaku will be honoring Kumu Tau'a, Amy Hanaiali'i and Uncle Richard Ho'opi'i. Comedian Andy Bumatai will host the event which will include music by the honorees, a live telethon and silent auction. Three Akaku Center restaurants will offer food specials. At 8 p.m., Akaku will present a free outdoor screening of Catherine Bauknight's award-winning film, "Hawai'i: A Voice for Soveriegnty."
