The Maui News

HONOLULU - Gas prices continued to fall across the state and on Maui with the average price of a gallon of unleaded regular in Wailuku on Thursday at $4.31 a gallon, down 23 cents from last week, the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch said.

That price is 55 cents less than last month and 5 cents lower than last year.

The state average price, which dropped for a sixth straight week, stood at $4.21 a gallon, 3 cents lower than last week, 25 cents lower than last month and 18 cents more than a year ago.

Honolulu's average price dropped to $4.14 a gallon for regular unleaded - 1 cent less than last week. In Hilo, the average gas price was $4.21 a gallon, which also was a penny less than last week.

"While prices have posted net drops for the week, Honolulu and Hilo gas prices have been moving up and down on various days during the past week, indicating a plateau rather than a straight decline," said AAA Hawaii Regional Manager Diane Peterson. "Drivers should aggressively shop for the best prices along their routes."

She made a pitch to members to take advantage of the 10-cent-per-gallon discount for cash gas purchases available at the Aloha Island Marts.

AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch is a weekly snapshot of gas prices. Prices are derived from fleet vehicle credit card transactions at more than 100,000 stations nationwide and are the combined averages of last card swipe of previous day.
