The Maui News
A Maui crew of six teenage Boy Scouts and their three adult leaders recently completed a trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. Philmont Ranch covers 214 square miles of wilderness with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet. During their trek, the Boy Scout Troop Venture Crew No. 618-K hiked 75 miles over a 10-day period. The crew of Jacy Maxwell (from left), Joey Cardoza, Thaddeus Harvey, Luke Gage, Parker Maxwell and Chris Baker pose after completing their journey June 28. Not pictured are leaders Fred Ventura, Mark Higa and Bryan Maxwell. The Scouts participated in backcountry programs along the way, including rock climbing, black-powder rifle shooting, blacksmithing and lumber pole climbing. The trek also included a conservation project where the group learned about and participated in the upkeep and conservation of Philmont’s ecosystem.
